Elan L. Guterman, MD, MAS, is a neurohospitalist and clinical researcher. Her career is focused on identifying gaps in the real-world care of common neurologic disorders such as epilepsy, stroke, and dementia and implementing solutions that improve access to high-quality care globally. Dr. Guterman's research focuses on identifying disparities and improving outcomes in the delivery of prehospital and inpatient seizure care. She is a co-investigator of the Care Ecosystem, a multidisciplinary program for patients with dementia and their caregivers, through which she is committed to identifying ways to bring high-quality dementia care to diverse communities across the U.S. She is also enthusiastic about collaborating with other faculty and trainees who are similarly passionate about advancing health equity. In her global health work, she serves as an advisor to Partners In Health (PIH) and is currently collaborating with the PIH mental health team to develop the first neurology and psychiatry residency training program in Sierra Leone. This work parallels her clinical responsibilities at UCSF attending on the inpatient neurology consult and ward service where she is deeply committed to education and mentorship of medical students, resident, and fellows. Dr. Guterman is affiliate faculty of the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies and serves as Viewpoints editor for JAMA Neurology.
