Nicholas Galifianakis, MD, is an associate professor of neurology at UCSF specializing in Parkinson's disease and movement disorders. He has witnessed firsthand that telemedicine and educational efforts can be powerful tools in delivering specialized medical care to underserved populations, both domestically and internationally. During the coronavirus pandemic, he has spearheaded efforts to promote virtual wellness and outreach programs to increase remote health care access for marginalized communities in the Bay Area and Central Valley. As a member of the Movement Disorders Society (MDS) Telemedicine Task Force in collaboration with the MDS Africa Section, he helped develop and successfully launch telemedicine consultation and education services in Nigeria, Tanzania, and South Africa. He is program director of the UCSF Movement Disorders Fellowship and developed the first-of-its-kind teleneurology rotation for UCSF neurology residents. He is currently in the UCSF Teaching Scholars Program, which fosters educational leadership, scholarship, and expertise in curriculum development. He is also developing a medical humanities curriculum for the Movement Disorders Fellowship.
