Dr. Joanna Hellmuth, UCSF Neurology Residency Class of 2014

Global health site: Partners in Health, Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais, Haiti

How did you spend your time? I worked alongside local healthcare providers to build their skills for managing neurologic disorders.

Advice to trainees interested in global neurology: Learn the language, culture, and customs of local providers and patients. Meet them where they are, as opposed to expecting them to accommodate you and your worldview.

The ideal global health project prioritizes the goals of local providers, as opposed to serving your own experience.
