Dr. Sumanth Reddy, UCSF Neurology Residency Class of 2024

Global health site: Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Neurológicas (Lima, Peru)

What was the goal of your project? I worked with Dr. Carlos Abanto and Dra. Sandra Villalobos to explore the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted to INCN with intracerebral hemorrhage.

How did you spend your time (and/or what did you learn from the experience)? I spent most mornings rounding with the Neurovascular service at INCN, which was a wonderful opportunity to learn about local systems of stroke care. I also had the opportunity to participate in teaching sessions for the residents, including journal club and grand rounds. In the afternoons, I worked with the medical archives team to review medical records for our research project.

Advice to trainees interested in global neurology: I have found neurologists interested in global health to be incredibly friendly and welcoming - if you're interested in learning more about opportunities in this field, don't hesitate to reach out and form connections with those in the field.

The protected research time that the FlexRes experience allows is an incredible opportunity for those interested in global collaborations. The mentorship at UCSF is unmatched and has been critical to my early career development!
