Dr. Nehali Mehta, UCSF Pediatric Neurology Residency Class of 2022

Global health site: Roatan, Honduras

What was the goal of your project? The goal of my project was to identify gaps in clinical neurology knowledge amongst health care providers in Roatan and to develop a clinically relevant series of neurology lectures for these providers.

How did you spend your time? Due to COVID restrictions, I was unfortunately unable to travel to Roatan. Therefore, through a series of video calls, I connected with different providers in Roatan to understand what topics in neurology they felt would be most helpful to review. Based on their feedback, I created an education module focusing on the basics of neonatal neurology and delivered this module through a series of video conferences.

Advice to trainees interested in global neurology: There are so many paths within global neurology to explore, from education, to research, to a clinical focus. Find the path that is right for you or build your own path! But ensure that you have a specific goal in mind that you share with your partnering site!

The global health mentors at UCSF are extremely dedicated to supporting all trainees who have a passion for global health and invest so much into helping them achieve their goals. UCSF has such great connections around the world, the opportunities are truly endless!
